Volunteers generally arrive from 10:30am on a Wednesday to help set up the hall and leave at around 2:30pm (depending on how busy it’s been!) having helped pack away. We welcome volunteers who can give their time every week, fortnightly, once a month or in the holidays!

Please be aware that, whilst we can welcome volunteers under the age of 18, they will need to be supervised by a parent, guardian or adult who knows them whilst at the food bank. Please email info@hangletonfoodbank.org to discuss this.

Volunteer Roles

Front of House Volunteer

Front of house volunteers help to set up the hall for service, bag up the fresh food and bread deliveries, welcome clients at the food bank and signpost clients to visiting organisations.

Back of House Volunteer

Back of house volunteers work in the store room, packing clients' bags according to their requests following our ‘packing list’. Please note this role may include lifting heavy bags of food.

Donation Sorting

Each week the food bank receives 20-30 bags of donations from lots of different donors; school, offices, places of worship, organisations and individual households.

As the food bank only has access to the food stores on a Wednesday 10.30-2.00, we need volunteers who are willing to sort and date check the donations on arrival so the back of house volunteers can restock the shelf after they complete packing the parcels

You will be working as part of a small team to make sure the tins are in date and suitable to give out to service users.

Tuesday Donation Collections

Each Tuesday evening between 20.45-21.00 volunteers collect donations from Tesco Hove (Church Rd) and Waitrose Hove and deliver items to the food bank.

If you are interested in any of the food bank roles, please contact our coordinator at info@hangletonfoodbank.org and she will contact in her next working hours.

Testimonial

We also welcome people who have used the food bank to volunteer their time when they no longer need support. Below is their experience in their own words.

When both our benefits were finally reinstated we were almost sad about not having our weekly trip across the road to see the lovely volunteers at the food bank. We started going to the coffee mornings up the road at St Peter’s. After a while I decided to go back to the food bank but this time as a volunteer. I’d appreciated the friendship and care that had been shown to me so much that I wanted to be able to give that to someone else who was in a similar position to the one I’d found myself in.

The friendship and sense of community that I get from volunteering has helped me enormously. I can’t work because I have mental health problems. I’m also not always able to volunteer and have had quite a number of months off during my couple of years at the food bank. But they always understand, they never put pressure on me to come back, but when I do I’m welcomed with open arms.
